About me

As a skilled software engineer in a management role, I aim to breed strong cross-functional collaborations, guide technical architecture, and apply over 20 years of experience in C/C++ development, database design, web development, API service delivery, and analytical data processing.

My expertise lies in managing large scale data and distributed/grid scientific pipelines, as applied in bioinformatics. I am committed to growing my knowledge and experience and guide teams to deliver on high value projects by applying innovative solutions to complex problems.

  Staff Scientist, Technical Program Manager (TPM)

  National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI/NLM/NIH)

  As TPM at one of the world's premier portals for biomedical and bioinformatics research, oversight covers the Sequence Curation, Organization, and Enhancements Program and its 3 Offerings:

  • Pathogen resources, integrating genomic sequences from food, environmental sources, and patients, to help agencies such as CDC and FDA investigate disease outbreaks in life-saving activities.
  • RefSeq, a trusted and foundational collection of sequence and gene information for Virus, Eukaryotic, and Prokaryotic genomes.
  • Protein resources like the well cited and respected CDD/SPARCLE.

• July 2015–March 2017

  Staff Scientist, Technical Lead

  Technical leadership for Genome Pipeline software development and the Eukaryotic Genome Annotation Pipeline. By 2017, the Pipeline had annotated nearly 500 eukaryotic genomes, published via the RefSeq reference sequence database.

• May 2008–July 2015

  Staff Scientist, Software Developer

  Transitioned to federal employment to grow in responsibility for developing critical software components of annotation pipelines.

  Expanded beyond the alignment and annotation phases, leveraging a long history in the project and deep knowledge of the system at all levels.

• April 2001–May 2008

  Senior Information System Specialist

  Lockheed Martin Management Systems Designers, Inc.

  As contractor at NCBI/NLM/NIH, developed production software in support of the alignment and annotation phases of the genome data processing pipeline. Involved in key roles for several major refactoring efforts.

  Technologies: C++, Python, SQL, scripting, Platform LSF, SGE/UGE.
